The Michigan Shakespeare Festival

The Michigan Shakespeare Festival is the premier regional event for those who revel in the elaborate language and bawdy humor of the Great Bard. The Michigan Shakespeare Festival brings high-quality theatrical entertainment to Michigan year after year, drawing respected actors from across the nation.

The Michigan Shakespeare Festival began in 1995 as the Jackson Shakespeare Festival. The next year, Festival attendance doubled when an outdoor replica of an Elizabethan courtyard theatre was erected in Ella Sharp Park for the event. The Festival is now held each year at the Baughman Theater in the George E. Potter Center on the campus of Jackson Community College.

In 2003, Governor Jennifer Granholm designated the Michigan Shakespeare Festival as “The Official Shakespeare Festival of the State of Michigan.” The Festival is affiliated with the University of Michigan Department of Theatre and Drama.
