Grass Lake

First settled in 1829, Grass Lake is today a popular village due in part to its proximity to Ann Arbor and Jackson. Designated as a “Cool City Neighborhood” in 2005, rural Grass Lake continues to maintain its charming bucolic character and keep its rich history alive.

Grass Lake became a permanent community with the addition of a railroad depot in 1842. Located at 218 E. Michigan Ave., the restored Michigan Central Railroad Depot remains a focal point of downtown Grass Lake. Other structures from the late 1800s and early 1900s contribute to the grand character of the downtown area, which holds restaurants, specialty shops and various antiques and arts shops.
Grass Lake County Park is a favorite location for residents and visitors alike. Sitting on the shores of the lake the village is named for, the County Park is the site of an annual Fourth of July celebration.

The Eyry of the Eagle Farm serves as a convention and reception hall that can accommodate up to 250 people, and holds three art galleries, a state of the art photography lab, a framing center and an animal viewing zoo. Located at 1916 Norvell in Grass Lake; call (517) 522-3705 for reservations.

Grass Lake Depot and Whistle Stop Park

Surrounded by Victorian gardens, the Grass Lake Depot and Whistle Stop Park is a 1887 Romanesque stone building. The Depot reminds visitors of a time when the train route between Detroit and Chicago was very busy, and 20 passenger trains a day ran through Grass Lake.

After a fire destroyed all but the depot’s stone walls in 1980, the Whistlestop Park Association eventually restored the depot to its present state. Located at 210 E. Michigan Ave., the depot is now utilized as a community center, and is also available for receptions, parties and more; call (517) 522-4384 for reservations.
